Commemorate the Heroes of World War 2 at War Memorial Park

The Civilian Memorial Park has been a place of rest of the dead bodies found in several mass graves during the Japanese regime in World War 2. From February 1942 to September 1945, World War 2 has been a massive tragedy everywhere in the globe and Singapore was no longer spared from its aftermath. There are more than 50,000 individuals who died during the Japanese Occupation in Singapore.

You can find the Civilian War Memorial at War Memorial Park. this served as the place of rest of the people who died during the 2nd World War while under the Japanese regime. War Memorial Park is managed and administered by the Singapore National Parks Board. Majority of the people buried here are from the races who chose to unite during the war. They are the Indian, Malay, Eurasion and Chinese.

The History:



The Prime Minister officiated The Civilian War Memorial project ceremony on June 15, 1963 that was attended by different non secular organizations, VIPs, community heads and a lot more. On February 15, 1967, the task was finished consistent with the twenty fifth anniversary of the Fall of Singapore.

The mass graves were created to give way to the bodies of the dead civilians who were all been killed by the Japanese people in Singapore. In 1962, the body remains of the people who died were excavated from locations all over Singapore. Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry came up with the decision of putting the remains of the dead people in one location to have a memorial for them. The Prime Minister at that time was  Lee Kuan Yew, he set aside a part of land to be used for the memorial at Beach Rd which later became the War Memorial Park.

Four Pillars



You can see the 4 pillars of the same size at the park. They are also 65 meters tall. They represent the pain, suffering and sacrifices of the people during the war which is consists of the 4 main races living in Singapore in World War 2. These races are Malay, Indian, Chinese, and Eurasian. There are also words that are written on the base of the memorial that are translated into 4 languages, Malay, Tamil, Mandarin, and English. It basically says Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation 1942-1945).


This 1.4 hectare park is a perfect place to relax and remember the heroes from World War 2. With a huge open space and trees all around, you can always feel very refreshed at this location.

Turn left onto North Bridge Rd
Ride a train at the City Hall Station
Alight at Opp Hong Lim Cplx
Head northeast on South Bridge Rd toward Hokien St
Turn left onto Upper Pickering St
Continue onto Havelock Rd
Arrive at 2 Havelock Rd, A1 Credit is located at #02-08
